BMW X1 at the Paris motor show 2008

The new X1 and 7-series were the stars of BMW’s Paris stand, but there were plenty more treats for showgoers, including the subtly revised 3-series saloon and Touring – the Efficient Dynamics-fettled 3 now boasting the lowest carbon emissions in its class.

Tell me more about the X1 and 7-series The X1 is BMW’s smallest off-roader, sitting below X5 and X3 – and, let’s not forget, above the soon-to-be-production-ready Mini Crossover Concept. In the metal it doesn’t actually look much smaller than the X3, but it does look a hell of a lot lower. It’s prettier than the X3 too, save the slightly odd clash of lines that congregate around the Hofmeister Kink area. BMW chairman Norbert Reithofer gave the Lexus LS a not-so-subtle kick in the goolies when he introduced the new 730d. ‘It uses only 7.2 litres per 100km,’ he said. ‘Can you think of any of today’s large hybrids that offer comparable mileage?’ Ooof. With the Lexus already down, BMW then went in for the kill with the world premier of the 7-series Active Hybrid – a V8 petrol augmented with electric hybrid power to boost mpg by 15 percent. It’ll be with us early in 2009, as will an Active Hybrid X6. Take that RX350!

What else is new on the BMW stand? CAR got incredibly distracted by a white 125i coupe kitted out with BMW’s Performance range: hardcore Recaros, carbon aero aids, M3-CSL style induction kit and six-pot brakes. Elsewhere we spotted the world debut of the 320d Xdrive Touring. Forget a hybrid X6, surely this is the ultimate four-by-four for eco-conscious downsizers.

CAR's verdict: BMW at the Paris motor show 2008You've got to hand it to them – BMW aren't standing still. There's still something of the Marmite about them; you'll either love or loathe its latest design statements, but you can't argue with the hybrid achivements or the persistent downsizing being offered.

Learning materials : how car Engine work

Hi people ,

though sharing this video with u will be helpful

here long detailed article about engine and how does it work enjoy ^_^ The potato canon uses the basic principle behind any reciprocating internal combustion engine: If you put a tiny amount of high-energy fuel (like gasoline) in a small, enclosed space and ignite it, an incredible amount of energy is released in the form of expanding gas. You can use that energy to propel a potato 500 feet. In this case, the energy is translated into potato motion. You can also use it for more interesting purposes. For example, if you can create a cycle that allows you to set off explosions like this hundreds of times per minute, and if you can harness that energy in a useful way, what you have is the core of a car engine!

Almost all cars currently use what is called a four-stroke combustion cycle to convert gasoline into motion. The four-stroke approach is also known as the Otto cycle, in honor of Nikolaus Otto, who invented it in 1867. The four strokes are illustrated in the above Figure . They are:

  • Intake stroke
  • Compression stroke
  • Combustion stroke
  • Exhaust stroke

You can see in the figure that a device called a piston replaces the potato in the potato canon . The piston is connected to the crankshaft by a connecting rod. As the crankshaft revolves, it has the effect of "resetting the cannon." Here's what happens as the engine goes through its cycle: 1- The piston starts at the top, the intake valve opens, and the piston moves down to let the engine take in a cylinder-full of air and gasoline. This is the intake stroke. Only the tiniest drop of gasoline needs to be mixed into the air for this to work. (Part 1 of the figure) 2- Then the piston moves back up to compress this fuel/air mixture. Compression makes the explosion more powerful. (Part 2 of the figure) 3- When the piston reaches the top of its stroke, the spark plug emits a spark to ignite the gasoline. The gasoline charge in the cylinder explodes, driving the piston down. (Part 3 of the figure)

4- Once the piston hits the bottom of its stroke, the exhaust valve opens and the exhaust leaves the cylinder to go out the tailpipe. (Part 4 of the figure)

Now the engine is ready for the next cycle, so it intakes another charge of air and gas. Notice that the motion that comes out of an internal combustion engine is rotational, while the motion produced by a potato cannon is linear (straight line). In an engine the linear motion of the pistons is converted into rotational motion by the crankshaft. The rotational motion is nice because we plan to turn (rotate) the car's wheels with it anyway.

Now let's look at all the parts that work together to make this happen, starting with the cylinders.

Basic Engine Parts

The core of the engine is the cylinder, with the piston moving up and down inside the cylinder. The engine described above has one cylinder. That is typical of most lawn mowers, but most cars have more than one cylinder (four, six and eight cylinders are common). In a multi-cylinder engine, the cylinders usually are arranged in one of three ways: inline, V or flat (also known as horizontally opposed or boxer), as shown in the following figures.

Inline - The cylinders are arranged in a line in a single bank.

V - The cylinders are arranged in two banks set at an angle to one another

Flat - The cylinders are arranged in two banks on opposite sides of the engine.

Different configurations have different advantages and disadvantages in terms of smoothness, manufacturing cost and shape characteristics. These advantages and disadvantages make them more suitable for certain vehicles. Let's look at some key engine parts in more detail.

- Spark plug :

The spark plug supplies the spark that ignites the air/fuel mixture so that combustion can occur. The spark must happen at just the right moment for things to work properly.

- Valves :

The intake and exhaust valves open at the proper time to let in air and fuel and to let out exhaust. Note that both valves are closed during compression and combustion so that the combustion chamber is sealed.

-Piston :

A piston is a cylindrical piece of metal that moves up and down inside the cylinder. Piston rings

- Piston rings :

provide a sliding seal between the outer edge of the piston and the inner edge of the cylinder. The rings serve two purposes:

  • They prevent the fuel/air mixture and exhaust in the combustion chamber from leaking into the sump during compression and combustion.
  • They keep oil in the sump from leaking into the combustion area, where it would be burned and lost. Most cars that "burn oil" and have to have a quart added every 1,000 miles are burning it because the engine is old and the rings no longer seal things properly.

- Connecting rod :

The connecting rod connects the piston to the crankshaft. It can rotate at both ends so that its angle can change as the piston moves and the crankshaft rotates.

- Crankshaft :

The crankshaft turns the piston's up and down motion into circular motion just like a crank on a jack-in-the-box does.

- Sump :

The sump surrounds the crankshaft. It contains some amount of oil, which collects in the bottom of the sump (the oil pan).

Next, we'll learn what can go wrong with engines.

Engine Problems

So you go out one morning and your engine will turn over but it won't start... What could be wrong? Now that you know how an engine works, you can understand the basic things that can keep an engine from running. Three fundamental things can happen: a bad fuel mix, lack of compression or lack of spark. Beyond that, thousands of minor things can create problems, but these are the "big three." Based on the simple engine we have been discussing, here is a quick rundown on how these problems affect your engine:

  • Bad fuel mix - A bad fuel mix can occur in several ways: -You are out of gas, so the engine is getting air but no fuel. -The air intake might be clogged, so there is fuel but not enough air. -The fuel system might be supplying too much or too little fuel to the mix, meaning that combustion does not occur properly. -There might be an impurity in the fuel (like water in your gas tank) that makes the fuel not burn.
  • Lack of compression - If the charge of air and fuel cannot be compressed properly, the combustion process will not work like it should. Lack of compression might occur for these reasons: - Your piston rings are worn (allowing air/fuel to leak past the piston during compression). - The intake or exhaust valves are not sealing properly, again allowing a leak during compression. - There is a hole in the cylinder. The most common "hole" in a cylinder occurs where the top of the cylinder (holding the valves and spark plug and also known as the cylinder head) attaches to the cylinder itself. Generally, the cylinder and the cylinder head bolt together with a thin gasket pressed between them to ensure a good seal. If the gasket breaks down, small holes develop between the cylinder and the cylinder head, and these holes cause leaks.
  • Lack of spark - The spark might be nonexistent or weak for a number of reasons: - If your spark plug or the wire leading to it is worn out, the spark will be weak. - If the wire is cut or missing, or if the system that sends a spark down the wire is not working properly, there will be no spark. - If the spark occurs either too early or too late in the cycle (i.e. if the ignition timing is off), the fuel will not ignite at the right time, and this can cause all sorts of problems.
  • Many other things can go wrong. For example: -If the battery is dead, you cannot turn over the engine to start it. -If the bearings that allow the crankshaft to turn freely are worn out, the crankshaft cannot turn so the engine cannot run. -If the valves do not open and close at the right time or at all, air cannot get in and exhaust cannot get out, so the engine cannot run. -If someone sticks a potato up your tailpipe, exhaust cannot exit the cylinder so the engine will not run. -If you run out of oil, the piston cannot move up and down freely in the cylinder, and the engine will seize. -In a properly running engine, all of these factors are within tolerance.

As you can see, an engine has a number of systems that help it do its job of converting fuel into motion. We'll look at the different subsystems used in engines in the next few sections.

Engine Valve Train and Ignition Systems

Most engine subsystems can be implemented using different technologies, and better technologies can improve the performance of the engine. Let's look at all of the different subsystems used in modern engines, beginning with the valve train. The valve train consists of the valves and a mechanism that opens and closes them. The opening and closing system is called a camshaft. The camshaft has lobes on it that move the valves up and down, as shown in Figure below.

Most modern engines have what are called overhead cams. This means that the camshaft is located above the valves, as you see in Figure . The cams on the shaft activate the valves directly or through a very short linkage. Older engines used a camshaft located in the sump near the crankshaft. Rods linked the cam below to valve lifters above the valves. This approach has more moving parts and also causes more lag between the cam's activation of the valve and the valve's subsequent motion. A timing belt or timing chain links the crankshaft to the camshaft so that the valves are in sync with the pistons. The camshaft is geared to turn at one-half the rate of the crankshaft. Many high-performance engines have four valves per cylinder (two for intake, two for exhaust), and this arrangement requires two camshafts per bank of cylinders, hence the phrase "dual overhead cams." The ignition system (Figure ) produces a high-voltage electrical charge and transmits it to the spark plugs via ignition wires. The charge first flows to a distributor, which you can easily find under the hood of most cars. The distributor has one wire going in the center and four, six, or eight wires (depending on the number of cylinders) coming out of it. These ignition wires send the charge to each spark plug. The engine is timed so that only one cylinder receives a spark from the distributor at a time. This approach provides maximum smoothness.

Engine Cooling, Air-intake and Starting Systems

The cooling system in most cars consists of the radiator and water pump. Water circulates through passages around the cylinders and then travels through the radiator to cool it off. In a few cars (most notably Volkswagen Beetles), as well as most motorcycles and lawn mowers, the engine is air-cooled instead (You can tell an air-cooled engine by the fins adorning the outside of each cylinder to help dissipate heat.). Air-cooling makes the engine lighter but hotter, generally decreasing engine life and overall performance.

So now you know how and why your engine stays cool. But why is air circulation so important? Most cars are normally aspirated, which means that air flows through an air filter and directly into the cylinders. High-performance engines are either turbocharged or supercharged, which means that air coming into the engine is first pressurized (so that more air/fuel mixture can be squeezed into each cylinder) to increase performance. The amount of pressurization is called boost. A turbocharger uses a small turbine attached to the exhaust pipe to spin a compressing turbine in the incoming air stream. A supercharger is attached directly to the engine to spin the compressor.

Increasing your engine's performance is great, but what exactly happens when you turn the key to start it? The starting system consists of an electric starter motor and a starter solenoid. When you turn the ignition key, the starter motor spins the engine a few revolutions so that the combustion process can start. It takes a powerful motor to spin a cold engine. The starter motor must overcome: - All of the internal friction caused by the piston rings - The compression pressure of any cylinder(s) that happens to be in the compression stroke - The energy needed to open and close valves with the camshaft - All of the "other" things directly attached to the engine, like the water pump, oil pump, alternator, etc.

Because so much energy is needed and because a car uses a 12-volt electrical system, hundreds of amps of electricity must flow into the starter motor. The starter solenoid is essentially a large electronic switch that can handle that much current. When you turn the ignition key, it activates the solenoid to power the motor.

VIDEO: Production Chevy Volt on the road

A few days ago GM finally introduced the production version of the Chevy Volt to the world (officially this time) much to the delight of the hundreds of journalists packing the hall and the thousands upon thousands of folks who descended upon the internets to get a good look and all the pictures. While it was truly wonderful to be able to see the car poised upon its pedestal after months of impatiently waiting and then sitting back and discussing things like whether this version will look better in a showroom than the original concept, it's quite another to see it in its natural environment, rolling down the road. Now, thanks to über Volt fan Dr. Lyle Dennis, who helps keep the world up-to-date on all the details of the vehicle through his GM-VOLT website, we can show you just that. And more! Lyle has gotten hold of a promotional video featuring the 40 mile "E-rev" gently cruising around a track and has posted it on Youtube. Not only do we get to see the Volt moving along from all different angles but there are also lots of shots showing off the bling interior with all the fancy LCD displays doing their thing. The soundtrack isn't even half bad. Hit to jump to see the production version of the Volt in action!

Automaker Bailout Appears Imminent; Detroit May Ask for More

Late yesterday, the House of Representatives passed a plan guaranteeing $25 billion in federal loans to Detroit automakers. The New York Times reports, "Unwilling to risk one last fiscal standoff with President Bush, the House on Wednesday passed a stopgap spending measure that pushes critical spending and energy decisions off until 2009 and into the hands of the next president." The bill includes "$25 billion in loan guarantees for the nation's auto manufacturers," but stipulates that the money must be used to help the companies make more fuel-efficient cars. Automakers would be required to begin making payments on the loans in five years, and complete payments within 30 years. The Detroit Free Press adds, "The Senate is expected to pass the bill today, and the measure should get a signature from President George W. Bush shortly thereafter." The scope of the loan measure is hard to overstate. This is by far the largest federal intervention into the auto industry. The Free Press notes, "The loan deal dwarfs the $1.2-billion bailout of Chrysler Corp. in 1979, and reflects the deep economic crisis threatening the survival of Detroit automakers and the companies that rely on them." Detroit, however, doesn't get the money right away. USA Today notes, "The second battle... over rules governing how the loans will be doled out now won't be decided until after the Presidential election." Industry analyst Rebecca Lindland of Global Insight told USA Today, "It's like getting an early Christmas gift and not being able to use it until spring. The value of this can't really be evaluated until they know the parameters. I have to reserve judgment until the explanation for how they can use this is clear." The automakers had wanted the rules governing how to qualify for the loans written now, before the presidential election takes place. They believed that "getting the rules written before the elections would have given the industry more clout in arguing for maximum flexibility in what qualifies," because Michigan and Ohio -- the two states where the auto industry employs the most workers -- are considered critical swing states in the election. JP Morgan analyst Himanshu Patel told USA Today, "The rules governing the distribution of the loans may become more onerous as the desire to win Michigan/Ohio votes would obviously become irrelevant after the November presidential election." The Big Three may not be finished asking for Federal help. The Detroit News reports, "Several Michigan legislators said they would seek approval of another $25 billion in loans next year." NISSAN : All-electric and original hybrid electric prototypes unveiled

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today unveiled all-electric and original hybrid electric prototype vehicles, both powered by advanced lithium-ion batteries. Under the NISSAN GT 2012 business plan, the company has committed to zero-emission vehicle leadership, and has announced plans to introduce an all-electric vehicle in 2010 and mass market globally in 2012.
Electric Vehicle (EV)Powered by advanced lithium-ion batteries, the EV prototype is part of Nissan’s substantial research and development program on zero emission vehicles. This latest generation vehicle features a front-wheel drive layout and uses a newly developed 80kW motor and inverter. The advanced laminated compact lithium-ion batteries are installed under the floor, without sacrificing either cabin or cargo space. The production vehicle to be introduced in 2010 will have a unique bodystyle and is not based on any existing Nissan model. Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV)The Nissan original HEV delivers two breakthrough technologies – a high-performance rear-wheel drive hybrid system and parallel-powertrain hybrid system. The hybrid employs Nissan’s own originally developed hybrid technology and its first rear-wheel drive hybrid powertrain. The parallel-powertrain system comprises an energy-optimizing system with two clutches, where one motor is directly connected to an engine and transmission via two separate clutches. Under changing driving conditions, the motor switches between the two clutches to optimize and conserve energy utilization as well as improve fuel-efficiency. The parallel-powertrain hybrid system eliminates the need for conventional torque converters, contributing to higher responsiveness and linear acceleration for improved driving feel. The dynamic characteristics of the clutches are as follows: Idle-stop: The battery is used to power the motor to save on fuel. Regular driving: The engine is used to power the motor as well as regenerate the battery. Acceleration: Both the engine and battery (power assist) is used to power the motor to achieve smooth acceleration. Deceleration: Energy from braking is conserved and re-routed back to regenerate the battery. Lithium-ion BatteryThe advanced lithium-ion batteries used in both prototypes are sourced from the Nissan-NEC joint-venture, AESC (Automotive Energy Supply Corporation). These advanced batteries offer superior performance, reliability, safety, versatility and cost competitiveness, compared to the conventional nickel metal-hydride batteries. Its compact laminated configuration delivers twice the electric power compared to conventional nickel-metal hydride batteries with a cylindrical configuration. The compact batteries also allow for improved vehicle packaging and a wide range of applications. Nissan has long experience in electric-powered vehicle development, commencing from the first EV "Tama Electric Vehicle" back in 1947. The company introduced the world’s first application of lithium-ion batteries to the Prarie Joy EV in 1996, followed by the ultra-compact electric vehicle, Hypermini, released in 2000. Nissan also introduced its first original hybrid vehicle Tino Hybrid back in 1999 in Japan. In 2006, the Altima Hybrid was introduced in North America using licensed technology. Under the Nissan Green Program 2010 environmental plan, the company aims to develop new technologies, products and services that can lead to real-world reductions in vehicle CO2 emissions, cleaner emissions, and recycling of resources. Nissan continues to invest substantially in a wide range of technologies including CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift), clean diesels, biofuels and fuel cell vehicles.

Porsche 911, Cayman and Boxster Tie for Most Ideal Sports Car in America

When renowned California-based automotive marketing and product-consulting firm AutoPacific surveyed over 33,500 new car owners, the full line of 2008 Porsche sports cars topped the field in the Premium Sports Car segment, and Porsche ranked as the Ideal Premium Brand for 2008 ahead of brands like Jaguar, Buick, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Land Rover among others. “Sweeping the field in the Premium Sports Car segment, owners provided validation that Porsche really knows their target buyer and understands how to build an ideal vehicle. This year they cleaned house in the Premium Sports Car segment. Not only did all of the Premium Sports Cars they produce score in the top three. It was a three-way-tie for first place, with the 911, Cayman and Boxster all sharing in the glory,” according to AutoPacific. Porsche’s fourth product line, the Cayenne, finished an impressive second in the Premium Luxury X-SUV segment. AutoPacific releases its highly regarded Ideal Vehicle Awards (IVA) results annually to measure owner desire for change across 15 specific areas related to a vehicle’s ride, handling, roominess, technology, comfort, and more. Vehicles with the least amount of desired changes are considered “ideal” vehicles, having met their buyer demands. Fiesta ECOnetic

All-new, ultra-low CO2 Fiesta ECOnetic is Ford's efficient car Combined fuel economy of 3.7l/ 100km and 98g/ km CO2 1.6-litre, 90 PS Duratorq TDCi with coated Diesel Particulate Filter Unique modifications, including improved aerodynamics package and low rolling resistance tyres
Bringing style and new levels of low-CO2 efficiency, Ford of Europe’s most frugal car – the new Fiesta ECOnetic – heads the Fiesta range at this year’s Paris Show. Powered by a specially-calibrated version of the 90 PS 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi, combined with coated Diesel Particulate Filter, Ford’s most economical Fiesta can travel 100 kilometres using just 3.7 litres of fuel, on the EC Combined Cycle. This impressive fuel economy is matched with a class-leading CO2 output of 98 grams per kilometre – making Fiesta ECOnetic the lowest CO2 vehicle in both its segment and Ford’s European range. Compared to previous-generation Fiesta 1.6-litre TDCi, Fiesta ECOnetic will use 160 litres less fuel over 20.000 km, offering genuine savings in daily driving, at a time when saving fuel means saving even more money. Extra-urban highway fuel economy is even better – Fiesta ECOnetic requires just 3.2 litres to cover 100 kilometres. Yet this efficiency is not at the expense of driving quality or performance, with Fiesta ECOnetic reaching 0-100 km/h in 12.3 seconds and a top speed of 178 kph. This is because Fiesta boasts the same attention to detail as earlier ECOnetic models, with improved aerodynamics, low rolling resistance tyres and enhanced lubrication to achieve best possible CO2 and fuel consumption. Lowered ride height and aerodynamic details such as wheel covers and wheel deflectors build on Fiesta’s already streamlined drag co-efficient (Cd) of 0.33. At the same time, low rolling resistance tyres in an economical 175/65 R14 profile, a longer final drive gear ratio and special lubricants drive efficient powertrain performance, especially in highway cruising. In conjunction with energy partner BP, Ford has developed low-viscosity transmission and low-friction engine oils for its ECOnetic models. Such modifications create Fiesta ECOnetic’s class-leading efficiency, without sacrificing the driving quality, style or practicality of the core Fiesta range. It is not just the ECOnetic version of new Fiesta that benefits from Ford of Europe’s sustainability efforts – all new Fiestas feature Electric Power Assist Steering (EPAS), using far less fuel and engine power than a standard hydraulic power assist system, without compromising driving dynamics or steering feedback. Extensive use of high strength steels and a focus on weight saving has also reduced the mass of new Fiesta by 40 kilogrammes versus the previous model, despite improved safety equipment and sound insulation. Production powered by renewable sourcesSustainability has influenced not only new Fiesta’s development, but also the facilities behind its manufacture. Ford’s Dagenham Diesel Centre in Britain produces Duratorq TDCi engines for new Fiesta and derives all its electricity from renewable sources, with two dedicated wind turbines and plans for a third. Ford is also sourcing renewable electricity to cover the full electric power demand of its Fiesta manufacturing and engineering facilities in Cologne, Germany. Through this initiative, the company will reduce its CO2 emissions by 190,000 tonnes per year. Dr Wolfgang Schneider, Ford of Europe Vice President for Legal, Governmental and Environmental Affairs said, “The new Fiesta is the strongest example yet of Ford of Europe’s commitment to and investment in sustainable mobility. Fiesta ECOnetic is a compelling, stylish yet no-compromise choice for customers, offering class-leading low CO2 and genuine savings, while also benefitting from our investment in efficient production facilities.”New Fiesta ECOnetic will be on sale across Europe later this year and completes an initial trilogy of production models in the company’s European vehicle range that also includes a 139 g/km Ford Mondeo ECOnetic and a 115 g/km Ford Focus ECOnetic.

Chrysler Begins Production of New Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Advanced two-mode hybrid system available in Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen Intelligent implementation of new manufacturing processes manages quality, cost Two-mode hybrid technology provides fuel-saving benefits of a full-hybrid system, including electric-only operation Auburn Hills, Mich., Aug 22, 2008 - Chrysler LLC's Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) began rolling off the assembly line this week at its Newark (Delaware) Assembly Plant. Chrysler is offering the two-mode hybrid powertrain on both vehicles built at the plant, Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen. In order to smoothly add one of the automotive industry's most advanced technologies into their established build process, cross-functional launch teams conducted highly accurate, cost-effective computer simulation of new assembly processes. Similar efforts were conducted at tooling suppliers. "The implementation of this new manufacturing process was done intelligently, with both quality and cost in mind." said Joe Ozdowy, Plant Manager of Newark Assembly. "I'd like to congratulate and thank the team for their dedication while bringing these important new products to market to help satisfy the changing needs of our Dodge and Chrysler customers." "The members of UAW Local 1183 continue to prove that they have the expertise, the experience, the training and the professionalism to successfully accomplish the most demanding and complex work," said Larry Dixon, President of UAW Local 1183. "This demonstration of excellence is something the men and women of UAW 1183 and UAW 1212 should be proud of." The production of early pilot vehicles was done on the plant's assembly line which helped to root out anomalies early in the pre-production process, helping to ensure a higher quality launch. Production of vehicles with the hybrid powertrain differs in several ways from production of those with conventional powertrains. New processes were implemented to accommodate HEV production, including a unique powertrain assembly process, and ergonomic-assist systems to aid in new functions, such as HEV battery installation. There are several unique components associated with HEV production that are installed at the plant, including: 300-volt battery Two-mode transmission Torque power inverter module (TPIM) Electric air conditioning Auxiliary power module High-voltage cables (AC and DC) Hydro-electric power steering pump Hybrid gate way module Cooling module Dodge Durango was the leader in its segment for initial quality, according to J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Initial Quality StudySM. With the advent of HEV production, a new series of error-proofing processes was put in place to ensure continued quality excellence. "We are proud of the highly skilled and dedicated employees at Chrysler's Newark plant," Delaware Governor Ruth Ann Minner said. "The employees at Newark Assembly continue to work hard to ensure the success of this new product line, and we are looking forward to these new hybrid vehicles being available to the public." The Advanced Two-mode Hybrid System Chrysler's LLC's advanced, state-of-the-art two-mode full hybrid system – developed in partnership with General Motors, Daimler and The BMW Group – integrates proven automatic-transmission technology with a patented hybrid-electric drive system to deliver the world's first two-mode full hybrid. As a result of low- and high-speed electrically variable transmission (EVT) modes, the system is defined as a "two-mode hybrid." In addition, the sophisticated fuel-saving system incorporates four fixed-gear ratios for high efficiency and power-handling capabilities. During the two EVT modes, the system can use the electric motors to improve fuel economy, acceleration, and for regenerative braking to utilize energy that would normally be lost during braking or deceleration. The energy is stored in the batteries for later use. The system's two modes are optimized for city and highway driving. In the first mode – at low speed and with light loads – the vehicle can operate in three ways: Electric power only Engine power only Any combination of engine and electric power The two-mode hybrid provides all of the fuel-saving benefits of a full-hybrid system, including electric-only operation. In this mode, the engine is "shut off," with the vehicle moving under electric-only power at low speed. The result is a significant reduction in fuel consumption in heavy stop-and-go traffic. The second mode is used primarily at highway speeds. In addition to electric assist, the second mode provides full power from engine when conditions demand it, such as when passing, pulling a trailer or climbing a steep grade. Pricing for the full-size 4x4 sport-utility hybrid electric vehicles is nearly $8,000 below the competition. The manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) for the new 2009 Dodge Durango HEMI® Hybrid is $45,340, including $800 for destination. The MSRP for the new 2009 Chrysler Aspen HEMI Hybrid is $45,570, including $800 for destination. Additionally, customers are expected to receive an estimated tax credit of $1,800.

Jeep Patriot is Least Expensive Sport Utility Vehicle to Own

Despite high gas prices and general economic uncertainty, many consumers are still in need of sport utility vehicles and are looking for the best values in the marketplace. A study by Edmunds.com, the premier online resource for automotive information, reveals that the Jeep Patriot is the least expensive sport utility vehicle to own. The results are based on Edmunds.com's True Cost to Own℠ data, which incorporates projected model-specific average vehicle ownership costs, consisting of depreciation, financing, taxes, fees, insurance premiums, fuel costs, maintenance and repairs. Edmunds.com's True Cost to Own℠ data accounts for total vehicle costs over a five-year period.
"Even though gas prices are high, some consumers are still in search of a sport utility vehicle to meet their needs,"said Jesse Toprak, Executive Director of Industry Analysis, Edmunds.com. "For those consumers, vehicles like the Jeep Patriot and Nissan Rogue are relative bargains in their segments." The following True Cost to Own℠ data is based on a price of $4.09 per gallon for regular gasoline (the national average on July 15): "One of the most telling aspects of TCO℠ is how vehicles with similar initial costs can have very different total ownership costs, primarily as a result of dissimilar depreciation rates," said Joe Spina, Senior Remarketing Manager, Edmunds.com. "Almost counter-intuitively, large SUV's are now being discounted so heavily that ownership costs have dropped to the point that they are actually a good buy for the right consumer — someone who needs an SUV and plans on keeping it for several years." Edmunds.com's True Cost to Own℠ calculations make the following assumptions: Ownership expenses are for a five-year time span Vehicles are driven 15,000 miles per year Vehicles are financed using traditional financing and not leased Buyers pay 10 percent down on the vehicle Buyers are in the "Gold" credit tier for the purpose of determining the finance rate The loan term is 60 months Buyers represent the average demographic in their state for insurance rates
